CHARLES R. DREW UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE & MEDICINE GRAND ENTRANCE
Willowbrook, CA 2017 - 2021
Charles R. Drew University School of Medicine and Science (CDU) is the only Historical Black College University in the state of California. Founded in 1966 in response to inadequate medical access within the Watts region of Los Angeles. Through innovative basic science, the University conducts education, patient care, and research programs training physicians and allied health professionals to provide care to underserved populations. Initially, the face of the university was a two-acre parking lot owned by the county of Los Angeles, which CDU could not use for its parking. Anderson Barker was hired to design a grand entrance and assist with the transfer of ownership of the land to the University. Anderson Barker engaged Ahbe Landscape Architects as its sub-consultant. The project involved adding a new brick-paved driveway, bioswale, and tree-planter boxes that can be removed for the annual Jazz at Drew concerts.
